As global discussions on sustainable development continue to intensify, the significance of corporate ethics, sustainable development, and social responsibility in business decision-making has greatly increased, making these topics a focal point for industry, government, and academia. With the growing impact of climate change and digital technology, today’s companies must reevaluate their influence and responsibilities in a rapidly evolving environment.
The College of Business, the Center for Corporate Social Responsibility, and the Department of Business Administration held the “2024 International Conference on Corporate Ethics and Social Responsibility” and the “2024 CYCU Department of Business Administration Academic Conference” on June 22, 2024. This conference integrated timely global issues, such as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), examining their impact on corporate ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability. Special guest speakers included Dr. Louis Cheng, Director of the ESG Research Center at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, and Dr. Truong Thi Thu Hang from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, National University of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, who explored new trends in global sustainable development.
The first keynote speech by Dr. Louis Cheng, titled “From CSR to ESG: The Pathway to Business Sustainability,” addressed how modern businesses are transforming, providing insights into the influence of ESG trends on corporate social responsibility.
The second keynote by Dr. Truong Thi Thu Hang, “Community-driven Tourism and Intangible Heritage: Sustaining Practice and Cultivating Meaning For The Next Generations (The Case of Gongs Culture of The Lach People in Lac Duong District, Lam Dong Province, Vietnam),” invited participants to reflect on the balance between economic development and sustainability.
Additionally, a roundtable discussion explored ESG trends and future prospects, accompanied by 16 research paper presentations on topics including sustainable development and financial performance, corporate ethics and social responsibility, university social responsibility, social enterprise and sustainability, consumer behavior, workplace health and ethics, technology application and management, industrial development and innovation, carbon management and financial performance, ESG and talent management, technology ethics and management, satisfaction studies, leadership and workplace ethics, social support and management, and cultural creativity and management.
The conference attracted 174 attendees and featured 62 paper presentations from scholars in Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Gambia. Notable awards included the Best Paper Award for National Taipei University’s research on “The Relationship Between Carbon Reduction Ambition and Financial Performance of Taiwan’s Listed Companies” and a collaborative study on “Traditional Architecture and Community Revitalization: A Discussion on the Digital Archiving of Cultural Heritage Under University Social Responsibility” by Chien Hsin University of Science and Technology, Nangang Vocational High School, Xinhua Vocational High School, and the Taiwan Urban and Rural Sustainability Development Association.
Within the Department of Business Administration’s conference, CYCU’s Department of Finance was awarded for “The Relationship Between Corporate Misconduct and Sustainability Report Verification,” while the Department of Business Administration was recognized for its study “Corporate Reputation Analysis with a Focus on Corporate Social Responsibility.”
Dean Li Cheng-Wen of the College of Business stated that the College will continue to promote ESG, corporate social responsibility, and corporate ethics, engaging in academic exchanges to advance related research. Moving forward, the College aims to further implement university social responsibility (USR) and ESG initiatives, striving for balanced professional and character development among students. This approach aligns with CYCU’s emphasis on “holistic education,” fostering students’ ethical awareness and sense of social responsibility.
The College of Business at CYCU is dedicated to equipping students with skills in corporate sustainability and social responsibility. This conference provided an international academic platform for theoretical and practical exchanges, offering a valuable opportunity for in-depth dialogue and collaboration with experts and scholars from around the world. Through keynote speeches and research presentations, the event addressed emerging trends in academia, industry, technology, environmental issues, and various cases of social responsibility, aiming to inspire new perspectives for sustainable development.
