Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, CYCU’s College of Business and the Global Taiwanese Business Research Center jointly hosted the “2nd Business Big Data Innovation Competition,” with the finals and award ceremony held on May 17. This competition aimed to cultivate students’ business thinking and analytical skills using the KEYPO Big Data Engine for precise public opinion searches, data analysis, and visualization, ultimately encouraging the creation of insightful and innovative industry-relevant reports.
The competition attracted 23 teams, totaling 73 students from seven departments, including Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Accounting, Finance, Financial and Economic Law, and the Bachelor Program in Smart Computing and Big Data. After two months of preliminary, semifinal, and final rounds, the students showcased their outstanding data analysis abilities and creative thinking. A panel of expert judges selected four winning teams from the Department of Management Information Systems, Department of Finance, and Department of Accounting, along with four other teams that received honorable mentions.
The Department of Management Information Systems at CYCU emphasizes practical applications and forward-thinking, equipping students with skills in data analysis and business insights to solve real-world problems. Under Professor Que Hao-En’s guidance, a team won first place and a cash prize with the project “Costco Co-Branding Wars: Did Cathay United Bank Lose?” Through in-depth data analysis and sharp business insights, the team demonstrated excellence in the field.
In the Department of Finance, under Professor Li Yan-Xian’s guidance, the focus is on integrating theory with practice, fostering a comprehensive understanding of financial products and markets. Two projects, “Insights into Dividend Investing” and “The Secrets Behind ETFs,” won second and third place, respectively, showcasing the students’ deep understanding and innovative application of financial data.
Additionally, under Professor Cao Mei-Juan’s guidance, the Accounting Department’s project “Carbon Fees! Carbon Waste?” won third place. The Accounting Department at CYCU places strong emphasis on social responsibility and sustainable business practices, encouraging students to cultivate a holistic view of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) to address corporate and societal needs. The team’s project offered a thorough analysis of environmental issues, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability.
Dean Li Cheng-Wen of the College of Business remarked that this competition not only highlighted students’ technical proficiency with big data tools but also underscored their innovative thinking in practical business applications. Dean Li pointed out that all eight finalist teams performed exceptionally well, demonstrating their ability to leverage big data analysis tools for meaningful insights and valuable recommendations for industry, government, and academia in the AI era.
In recent years, the College of Business has actively implemented the Ministry of Education’s Key Talent for Smart Innovation Program, which aims to develop digital talent with cross-disciplinary thinking and smart applications to meet the needs of industry transformation and upgrading. Dean Li further emphasized that the training gained from this big data analysis competition is an effective way to enhance students’ skills in utilizing smart technology, aligning with the Ministry of Education’s and the College’s goals for talent cultivation.
